Los Angeles - The UCLA women's rowing team travels to San Pedro this Saturday, March 30, to face cross-town rival USC in the first annual dual meet between the two teams. The event will take place at the USC Boathouse, which is located at Berth 192 in the port of Los Angeles. The first event will take place at 9 a.m. and the last crew will row at 10 a.m.
Saturday's meet features the Lexus Gauntlet Challenge, a season-long competition between UCLA and USC. This unique program awards points for the winner of each Bruin-Trojan head-to-head athletic contest throughout the year. The winner of the meet will capture the five points allocated toward women's rowing for the gauntlet. USC currently leads the challenge 47.5 - 35.0.
Four races are scheduled for the dual meet: the Varsity 8, JV 8, Varsity 4, and Novice 8. UCLA and USC will submit one crew in each event. The meet winner will be determined by a point system similar to the one used at the Pac-10 Championships. Three points will be awarded to the Varsity 8 winner, two to the JV 8, and one apiece to the winners of the Varsity 4 and Novice 8.
The Bruins last raced on Saturday, Match 23, at the Berg Cup in Newport Beach. The Varsity 8 finished third in the trophy race, 13 seconds behind first-place finisher, University of San Diego. The UCLA JV 8 and Novice 'A' boats finished second in their races, while the UCLA Novice 'B' crew beat UC Irvine in the Second Novice race.
The Trojans, ranked 4th in the 2001 post-season rankings, raced last week against San Diego State. USC's Varsity Eight beat the Aztecs by nearly 30 seconds, while the JV boat finished in a tie and the Novice boats were defeated by SDSU.
