Palma de Mallorca, Spain - Despite drawing the World University Games' toughest bracket in water polo, Team USA solidly defeated Kazakhstan in Sunday's 7-4 battle.
Brent Albright, Daniel Klatt and team captain Layne Beaubien all contributed two goals, and UCLA's Adam Wright (Seal Beach, Calif.) scored once. Goalie Merrill Moses racked up high numbers too, saving an impressive 14 direct shots on goal.
Albright opened the scoring for the U.S. at 5:58 of the first period. It was the first shot on goal and set the tone for a strong U.S. performance.
Team USA never lost their lead. Beaubien closed the first quarter with the game's second goal at 1:41, keeping Kazakhstan scoreless, 2-0. Less than a minute into the second quarter, Arterly Sevostyanov finally broke through Moses to score Kazakhstan's first goal. Klatt and Beaubien quickly responded with two for Team USA at 5:35 and 4:49, respectively. Denu Zhivchikov's score on goal at 4:08 was the last point of the half.
Seventeen seconds into the second half, Albright slammed his second goal through Kazakhstan's No. 1, Alexandr Shvepov, giving the U.S. a three-point lead. But Zhivchikov and Eugenu Zhilhaev narrowed that gap to one with third-quarter goals of their own at 2:53 and 1:13.
Team USA didn't give its first opponents of WUG any more goals, keeping Kazakhstan at four until the game's end. But Wright and Klatt tallied two more scores for the U.S., Wright's first at 1:54. Klatt's 24 second goal was the final point, stretching out the U.S. lead to 7-4.
"It's a big win for us," said head coach Ted Newland.
Team USA faces Hungary on Monday at 8 p.m. at UIB. Hungary defeated the fourth team in the bracket, Yugoslavia, 10-8 in Sunday's match following USA vs. Kazakhstan.
