Final Stats

LOS ANGELES - UCLA senior 1B Claire Sua's one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Andrea Duran from second base and gave the Bruins a 3-2 victory over top-ranked Arizona (51-4, 15-3 Pac-10) on Friday afternoon at Easton Stadium. For UCLA (37-9, 10-8), Duran went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and two runs scored while senior Keira Goerl struck out nine and walked two for her 22nd victory of the season.

UCLA opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, as Andrea Duran posted a one-out double. She would come around to third base on a sharply hit ball by Lisa Dodd that hopped up and knocked Wildcat 3B Jackie Coburn to the ground. The ball was then picked up by UA pitcher Leslie Wolfe, whose errant throw to first base allowed Duran to come home, scoring the first run of the game and giving UCLA a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Wildcats put together a rally of their own, as Autumn Champion led off the inning with a full-count walk, followed by the first Arizona hit of the game, a single to center by Wendy Allen. Mackenzie Vandergeest then drew a walk to load the bases for Kristie Fox, who struck out looking to record the first out of the inning. The pattern repeated in the next at-bat of the game, as Shelly Schultz was also called out on strikes with Goerl tossing just three pitches in the at-bat. Samantha Quintero then stepped in and worked the count full before flying out to center field to end the inning and the threat.

The Wildcats put together another two-out rally in the fifth inning, as Caitlin Lowe singled to center and Autumn Champion followed with a bunt single, but Wendy Allen struck out looking to end the inning and the Arizona threat.

However, the Wildcats came out in the top of the sixth inning as Vandergeest led off with a single to left field, went to second when the Bruins tried to gun the lead runner on Fox's sacrifice bunt, and came home to score on a single by Shelly Schultz. Fox went to third base on the play, and looked to be gunned down at the bag, but was called safe, giving the Wildcats runners on the corners with nobody out. Quintero then struck out before Jackie Coburn put down a suicide squeeze to score the go-ahead run.

Arizona took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but the Bruins manufactured the game-tying run as Jodie Legaspi led off the inning with a single up the middle. Legaspi then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Emily Zaplatosch, and went to third on a ground out by Kristen Dedmon. Left fielder Ashley Herrera then stepped in and connected on a ground ball that rolled just far enough up the third base line to score Legaspi from third base and tie the game. As the play concluded, however, Herrera was called out at first base on the look-back rule to end the inning.

Champion opened the top of the seventh for the Wildcats with a hit and went to second base on the play on a Bruin error. After Allen struck out for the first out of the inning, Vandergeest popped out and Fox struck out to end the inning and the Arizona threat.

The top of the Bruin lineup started the bottom of the seventh inning, and Caitlin Benyi and Andrea Duran both singled up the middle to open the inning. After Lisa Dodd grounded into a fielders choice with Benyi thrown out at third base. Claire Sua then worked the count full before hopping the game-winning single just over the bag at third base. As the ball made it into left field, Bruin head coach Sue Enquist waved Duran around to score the game-winning run.

Keira Goerl had an impressive day in the circle for the Bruins, recording her 22nd victory of the season while striking out nine and walking just two on the day.

The Bruins complete their regular season schedule tomorrow, May 15, with a 1 pm doubleheader against Arizona State. UCLA's five seniors, Amanda Simpson, Julie Hoshizaki, Keira Goerl, Claire Sua and Stephanie Ramos, will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
