This Week - UCLA In Seattle For Dual & Team Indoors
UCLA travels to Seattle where it will face the University of Washington on Tuesday, Feb. 16, then compete in the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by Washington Feb. 18-21. The Bruins' first round opponent in the tournament will be Southern Methodist University.
New Rankings Due Out Tuesday, Feb. 16
The First ITA National rankings of 1999 will be released on Tuesday, Feb. 16. UCLA currently has two individuals ranked in singles, but two of the top three Bruin players did not compete enough during the fall to retain a ranking and are expected to reappear.
About This Week's Opponents - Washington & SMU
The University of Washington is ranked No. 18 entering the week and has two singles player and one doubles team listed in the fall edition of the national rankings. Robert Kendrick is No. 8 entering the season and brings a 16-3 overall record into the week, while Andy Posavac is tied for No. 96. Eric Drew played the most recent at No. 1 singles and remains undefeated, 6-0, in duals. The doubles team of Kendrick and Nick Quatrochi is listed No. 25 in the rankings. The Huskies entered the week 5-1 in dual matches and are 1-1 in Pac-10 action. Last year, UCLA suffered its first loss of the series at Washington (2-5), then won 4-2 in Los Angeles to bring the series record to 10-1.
Southern Methodist is tied for No. 10 in the fall edition of the national rankings and owns a 6-1 record entering the week. The Mustangs have three singles players and two doubles teams listed in the fall edition of the national rankings. Leading the way in a tie for the No. 17 slot is senior Ignacio Hirigoyen who enters the week 16-8 overall and 5-2 in the No. 1 singles slot. SMU's top doubles team of junior Dustin Mauck and senior Keith Pollak is ranked No. 7 and boast a 16-7 overall record, including a 4-3 mark in the No. 1 position. UCLA owns a 12-2 advantage in the all-time series with SMU.
Last Week - Bruins Victorious Over San Diego & USC
UCLA improved its home record to 5-0 with victories over the University of San Diego and cross-town rival USC last week. Despite a chilly day, the Bruins posted their third sweep of the season en route to the 7-0 win over San Diego on Wednesday. The largest crowd of the season turned out for the annual battle with rival USC on a beautiful sunny Friday afternoon. UCLA dropped the doubles point for the first time this season, but managed to recover and register a solid 5-2 win over the Trojans.
Player Notables - Keeping The Slate Clean
Three Bruins are undefeated in singles dual matches entering the week. Sophomore Chris Sands owns a 7-0 record with matches in the Nos. 4-6 positions, while junior Marcin Rozpedski is 3-0 in the Nos. 5 and 6 slots and sophomore Noah Newman won his only dual in the No. 6 position. The Bruins No. 2 doubles team of senior Jason Cook and junior Brandon Kramer is also undefeated in dual matches. Their 7-0 slate includes one win in the No. 1 slot, and the duo is 9-1 overall.
UCLA's top doubles team of sophomore Jean-Noel Grinda and junior Jong-Min Lee had their perfect dual record tarnished on Friday with a loss to USC's team of Ryan Moore and Nicholas Rainey. This is the same team which handed Grinda/Lee its only other loss during tournament action on Jan. 16.
Next Up - Bruins Return Home To Host UC Irvine & Rice
The Bruins return home to host the twice rescheduled UC Irvine match on Thursday, Feb. 25 then entertain Rice on Saturday, Feb. 27. Both matches begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center and admission is FREE.
