UCLA to Face No. 3 Duke This Wednesday . . .
The No. 9 UCLA men's tennis team (10-4) hosts its second top-10 opponent in less than a week on Wednesday, as No. 3 Duke (9-2) visits the Los Angeles Tennis Center for a 1:30 p.m. match. Although the Bruins lead the all-time series 11-2, the Blue Devils won the last meeting between the two teams, taking a 4-3 victory at the LATC back in 2004. Baylor Edges UCLA in NCAA Title Rematch . . .
Seventh-ranked Baylor edged No. 6 UCLA, 4-3 over the weekend in a battle of two teams that have faced each other in the last two NCAA Finals. As expected, Saturday's dual went down to the wire, as both teams were tied at 3-3 following singles play. Doubles, which was played following singles due to the weather, was highly competitive, with UCLA winning at court No. 1 and Baylor taking an 8-5 decision at court No. 2. The dual match came down to court No. 3, where Baylor's David Galic and Will Ward posted a 9-7 victory over Mathieu Dehaine and Aaron Yovan.
UCLA in the Fila/ITA Rankings . . .
With its loss to Baylor over the weekend, UCLA fell three spots to No. 9 in the latest rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Tuesday. Individual rankings were released last week and Benjamin Kohlloeffel moved up a spot to a career-high No. 2 in singles play. He is followed by No. 74 Mathieu Dehaine and No. 78 Chris Surapol. In doubles, Philipp Gruendler and Kohlloeffel check in at No. 8. New team and individual rankings will be released on Mar. 21.
Kohlloeffel Falls in Indian Wells Qualifying . . .
Junior Benjamin Kohlloeffel lost to Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-1, 6-4 in the opening round of qualifying at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, Calif. Kohlloeffel earned a wild card into the Masters Series event by capturing the singles title at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. Garcia-Lopez is ranked No. 91 in the latest ATP Tour entry rankings.
So Close . . .
All four of UCLA's losses this season have been 4-3 scores. In addition, every team to have beaten the Bruins this year has been ranked in the in the top-12 nationally: #2 Georgia, #4 Pepperdine, #7 Baylor and #12 Stanford. The third-ranked Duke Blue Devils will be the eighth top-25 opponent UCLA has faced this season.
Streaks/Misc. Stats . . .
Benjamin Kohlloeffel owns a 16-1 record against ranked opponents this season and is the first player to reach 30 wins, owning a 30-3 overall record. He takes a 10-match winning streak into this Wednesday's meeting with Duke. Junior Chris Surapol has also been extremely hot as of late, winning 10 of his last 11 singles matches. He owns the best dual-match record on the team (10-1) and is 21-5 overall. In doubles, Philipp Gruendler and Kohlloeffel are a perfect 12-0 in dual-match play and own a 17-2 overall record.
Head Coach Billy Martin . . .
UCLA head coach Billy Martin owns a 290-57 (.836) overall record in his 13th season in Westwood. He led UCLA to its first NCAA title in more than 20 years this past May, as the Bruins pulled off a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Baylor in the 2005 NCAA final. As a player at UCLA in 1975, Martin captured the NCAA Singles Championship before going on to a very successful professional career. He is a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame.
