WALNUT CREEK, CA - UCLA senior Keira Goerl has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Stanford's Jessica Allister earned the conference Player of the Week award.
Goerl went 2-0 this week with wins over No. 1 Arizona and Arizona State. In UCLA's game against Arizona on May 14, Goerl struck out nine Wildcats and walked just two as UCLA defeated Arizona 302. A day later, in the first game of UCLA's doubleheader with Arizona State, Goerl pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out six and walking two. For the week, she had a 1.00 ERA in two complete-game starts and 14 innings in the circle. She struck out 15 and walked four, holding opposing batters to a .200 batting average.
Goerl has won the award 11 times in her UCLA career, putting her in a tie for second place all-time in the Pac-10 with fellow Bruiin Lisa Fernandez. It is the 81st time that a UCLA player has been honored.
