Los Angeles - The third-ranked UCLA men's water polo team defeated Cal Baptist, 21-3, in the Bruins' season opener Thursday afternoon at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. In the non-conference tilt, 14 Bruins registered at least one goal, with six players netting two or more goals.
UCLA senior Grant Zider led the Bruins' scoring attack with three goals. The Bruins (1-0) raced to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter after freshman Scott Swanson scored the game's first goal at 6:48. Zider struck twice in a span of 1:21, helping give the Bruins the five-goal cushion. Cal Baptist freshman Jason Bills recorded the Lancers' first goal of the afternoon with 58 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The Bruin defense, anchored by freshman goalkeeper Chay Lapin through the first half, shut down the Lancers (6-3) in the second quarter. Making his collegiate debut, Lapin made two saves and allowed one goal. UCLA outscored Cal Baptist 7-0 in the second frame, as sophomore Krsto Sbutega led the way with two goals.
Cal Baptist scored twice in the third frame, with goals coming from sophomore Chris Morgan and senior Charlie Weaver. UCLA senior goalkeeper Will Didinger played in the third quarter and made two saves.
Leading 17-3 through three quarters, UCLA continued its offensive charge with an extra-man goal at 7:21 in the fourth quarter by freshman Kevin Kuga, who made his collegiate debut and also won two sprints. Matt Kellogg entered for the Bruins in the fourth quarter and recorded two stops.
UCLA improves 5-0 all-time against the Lancers. The Bruins will compete in the NorCal Tournament this weekend at Stanford. UCLA is slated to play their first game at 10:40 a.m. on Saturday against Princeton.
