LOS ANGELES - Playing its first dual match since capturing the 2005 NCAA Title, the fifth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team posted a 5-2 victory over San Diego Friday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory, the Bruins move their all-time record to 22-0 over the Toreros.

UCLA jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning on two of the three doubles courts. The Bruins' No. 1 team of Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel got things started, posting an 8-6 victory over USD's Thomas Liversage/Pierrick Ysern. That was quickly followed by another UCLA victory at court No. 2, where Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol downed Jonas Mouly/Oscar Plotnik, 8-6. Although the doubles point had already been decided, USD managed to pull out a 9-8(4) win at court No. 3.

UCLA moved out to a 2-0 lead shortly after singles play began, as USD's Mirza Koristovic was forced to retire with an injury following the first set of his match with Abid at court No. 2. Abid, who was appearing in the first dual match of his UCLA career Friday, had taken the first set 6-2.

Sophomore Jeremy Drean put the Bruins ahead 3-0 when he downed Matt Ozurovich, 6-2, 6-4 at court No. 6. Surapol clinched the win for UCLA at court No. 5, where he took a 6-1, 6-4 win over Mouly.

With the Bruins up 4-0 and the match already decided, two of the three remaining matches were decided by 10-point tiebreakers in place of a third set. That was the case with the featured match of the afternoon at court No. 1, where Ysern, a finalist in the NCAA Singles Tournament a year ago, edged third-ranked Kohlloeffel, 4-6, 6-3, (10-8).

The Toreros were able to get another point moments later when Liversage battled back from a set down to defeat Gruendler, 4-6, 7-5, (10-6) at court No. 4.

In the final match of the afternoon, UCLA sophomore Mathieu Dehaine recorded a 7-5, 6-3 win over Plotnik at court No. 3.

The Bruins return to action next week, hosting BYU on Wednesday and Boise State on Friday. Both matches are at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m.
