The UCLA men's soccer team has added another top youth player for the 2002 season, signing Lukas Mehring from Malibu High School.
Mehring, a midfielder/defender, earned first-team All-CIF honors in 2001 while leading Malibu HS to the CIF Championship. This season, as team captain, he was selected the league Co-Player of the Year after scoring a team-high 32 goals in 20 games.
He is a member of the ODP Region IV team with future Bruin teammates Evan Corey and Michael Gardner and was a two-year starter for the ODP Cal South State team. As team captain of the SoCal United club team, he led his squad to the Coast Premier League Championship in 2000-01.
"Luke Mehring rounds out a class that we are very proud of," said UCLA assistant coach Jorge Salcedo. "Luke is a versatile player. He can provide depth for a team in many positions. He has good size and strength and is a very good passer of the ball. He, like the other incoming freshmen, is a good person and will be a very welcome addition to the program."
Mehring joins five other players who have already signed national letters of intent - Corey, Gardner, Jordan Harvey, Eric Reed and Nate Pena.
