Women's Volleyball Falls to Cardinal in Five

STANFORD, Calif. - The UCLA women's volleyball team was unable to stop its losing streak against Stanford on Thursday night, this time falling Stanford (16-6, 8-3 Pac-10) in five games, 25-30, 30-25, 32-30, 25-30, 15-8. UCLA had three players with double-figure kills in the match, led by Becky Green with 18. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 14-8, 7-5 Pac-10.

UCLA won the first game of the match hitting .400 as a team with 20 kills and just six errors on 35 attacks, while Stanford hit .270 by comparison. Becky Green, Brynn Murphy and Krystal McFarland each had four kills for the Bruins in the opening game of the match, with the Bruins leading throughout.

Katie Carter stepped up offensively for the Bruins in the second game of the match, recording four of her six kills in that game, while Green once again tallied four kills. The Bruins were unable to continue their high attack percentage, checking it at .136 as a team to Stanford's .278.

Green and Brittany Ringel led the way in game three, with five and six kills, respectively, in the game. With 12 tie scores and five lead changes in the game, neither team hit over .200 in the game with the Cardinal at .180 and the Bruins at .116.

Game four saw the Bruins win with a score of 30-25 with Nancy Barba as the hot hitter, recording nine kills on 12 error-free swings for a .750 attack percentage. The Bruins and Cardinal were tied as late as 7-7 before UCLA took the lead at 8-7 and held throughout. The game four win sent the Bruins to their fifth five-game match of the season.

In game five, the Cardinal sprinted out to an 8-1 lead and UCLA was never able to recover, falling 15-8. Becky Green was the Bruins kill leader in the game with three, but UCLA hit just .091 to Stanford's error-free .727 in the deciding game.

For the match, Becky Green led the Bruins with 18 kills, followed by Nancy Barba with 14 and Brynn Murphy with 13. Nana Meriwether led the Bruins on the blocks with nine block assists, and was therefore involved in nine of the teams' 11 blocks in the match. Chrissie Zartman led all players with 23 digs in the match.

UCLA returns to action on Friday night against California. The match is scheduled for a 7 pm start at Cal's Haas Pavilion.
