LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The UCLA Women's Water Polo team defeated No. 6 California in overtime 6-5 at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. In their second meeting with the Golden Bears this season the Bruins had to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the fourth period and earned their first lead of the game in the first overtime period. With the victory the Bruins move to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF, California drops to 5-6. Tomorrow at1:00 PM UCLA will host Pacific in another MPSF game.
Cal would get on the board first, scoring with 2:26 left in the first period before Kristina Kunkel answered back with less than a minute remaining in the first period on a 6 on 5 goal. The second and third periods would be defensive affairs as the Bruins were unable to find the back of the net, while California scored once in the second period to take the 2-1 lead going into the final period. In the fourth period Cal scored to open a 3-1 lead, but UCLA's Lauren Heineck would answer back on the Bruins next possession to get UCLA within one. It would then be Heineck again as the sophomore co-captain would score on a 6 on 5 to tie it at 3-3 with 3:35 remaining and neither team was able to score for the remainder of regulation. In the first overtime UCLA got its first lead of the game with a goal by Kristina Kunkel, but California would answer to tie it at 4-4 going into the second overtime period. UCLA would once again score first with a goal by Molly Cahill, but California would not go away as they were able to tie it at 5-5 with 1:27 remaining. With just over a minute remaining a goal by Kacy Kunkel would give UCLA the lead for good as the Bruins would play solid defense the rest of the way to earn the 6-5 victory.
