HONOLULU, HI - UCLA improved to 2-0 on the season on Sunday night in Honolulu, recording a 30-25, 30-25, 30-22 victory over No. 9 Ohio State at the 15th Annual Hawaiian Airlines Classic. The 11th-ranked Bruins were led by senior co-captain Lauren Fendrick, who recorded 13 kills and 12 digs in the match, while Ohio State's Stacey Gordon led all players with 22 kills. UCLA hit .385 as a team for the match, including a one-error .464 performance in game two and a .410 mark in game three.
Ohio State started quickly in the opening game of the match, pulling out to an early 8-5 lead. The Bruins then scored four straight points, three behind the service of freshman setter Haley Jorgensborg, to tie the score at 8-8. The teams would battle back and forth to the 23-23 mark before UCLA scored another string of three points, again on the service of Jorgensborg, and would never relinquish the lead, wrapping up game one with two Cira Wright kills to earn the 30-25 opening game win. Lauren Fendrick led the Bruins with six kills in game one, hitting .500 with no errors.
After trading points to the 4-4 mark, the Buckeyes started to pull away, quickly taking an 8-4 lead. UCLA slowly chipped away at that lead, tying the game at 19 and taking its first lead of game two at 24-23. A four-point rally took UCLA to a 29-24 lead before an Angela Eckmier kill sent the teams to the locker room with a 2-0 UCLA lead.
UCLA followed its .464 hitting percentage performance in game two with a .410 effort in game three, downing the Buckeyes 30-22 to complete the sweep. The Bruins led throughout game three, and scored on five of the final eight rallies in game three.
For the match, the Bruins hit .385 as a team and out-blocked the Buckeyes by a 7-4 margin. Angela Eckmier led the way for UCLA on the block with one solo and three block assists in the match. Fendrick double-doubled with 13 kills and 12 digs on the night, and was the only Bruin with double-figures in either category. OSU's Stacey Gordon had the top kill total in the match with 22 kills on the evening.
UCLA will conclude its Hawaiian Airlines Classic tournament schedule on Monday afternoon at 5 pm HT with a match against host Hawai'i at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
