Los Angeles - Fresno State junior Andy Underwood outlasted UCLA junior Dave Huff in a tight pitching dual to earn a 5-0 victory over the Bruins on Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. With the loss, UCLA falls to 0-2 while Fresno State improves to 2-3.
UCLA and Fresno State were deadlocked at 0-0 until the top of the eighth inning when the Bulldogs mounted a rally. Fresno State had runners on first and second after a pair of singles and was able to load the bases on an infield error. A base hit by Fresno State junior Nick Moresi with two outs would break the scoreless tie at 1-0. Sophomore Beau Mills would follow with a grand slam home run to right field to put the Bulldogs up 5-0.
In his first pitching appearance as a Bruin, Huff (0-1) went 7.2 innings allowing two unearned runs and one walk, while tallying eight strikeouts.
For UCLA, freshman Tim Murphy led the way going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.
UCLA and Fresno State will play the final game of the series on Sunday, Feb. 5 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
