Darkness Suspends Second Round of Men's Pac-10 Golf

April 26, 2004

The third-ranked UCLA men's golf team endured a roller-coaster day at the 45th Pacific-10 Men's Golf Championships, hosted by Arizona at the Gallery at Dove Mountain North Course.

UCLA currently is in third place at 12-over par, trailing both Arizona State and Arizona, who are co-leaders at even par. The Bruins have to complete two holes on Tuesday before the third round begins. Washington is fourth at 18-over par, follwed by USC at 29-over. Two other schools, Stanford and Washington State, also must complete the second round on Tuesday morning.

Individually, the Bruins' Travis Johnson propelled himself onto the leaderboard on the strength of a hot second round. After bogeying the first two holes in round two, Johnson reeled off six straight birdies and was five-under par when play was halted at his 16th hole. He currently is in sixth place at three-under par after a 74 in the first round.

Senior Steve Conway began the second round with a triple bogey on No.1 and a bogey four at the par 3 third to go to four-over par. He eagled the par 5 sixth and birdied the ninth to make the turn at 37, one-over. Conway then eagled the par 5 11th to move to one-under, and birdied the par 3 15th to move to two-under before play was suspended. He currently is tied for seventh at one-under after posting a 73 in the first round.

Junior John Poucher is tied for ninth place at 145, one-over par. After a 74 in the first round, he ran together three straight birdies on the front nine of his second round to make the turn at 35. He birdied the 10th and bogeyed the 15th before finishing with a 71.

Defending champion John Merrick had trouble getting untracked all day. He posted a 75 in the first round and was five-over par through 16 holes in the second round, tied for 33rd place at eight -over.

Senior Roy Moon was tied for 40th place at 154, 10-over par and freshman Peter Campbell was tied for 38th at nine-over par 153.
