Bruins Compete At NCAA Championships - The No. 18 UCLA Bruins (6-4-1, 1-4-1) travel to Athens, Georgia to compete in the 1999 Women's Swimming & Diving NCAA Championships from Thurs. Mar. 18-Sat. Mar. 20. UCLA is taking 11 swimmers and one diver, the most swimmers for the Bruins since its seventh place finish at the 1994 NCAA Championships. UCLA finished 13th at NCAAs lasts season with a score of 121.0 and will aim for a top-10 finish this season.
UCLA At The NCAAs - In 16 years of NCAA competition, UCLA has always finished in the top-25, and in the top-10 on ten occasions and the top-15 fifteen times (see chart on page 2). Under the direction of head swimming coach Cyndi Gallagher, UCLA finished in the top-10 for seven straight years (1989-95). She helped lead UCLA to its highest finish at NCAAs, claiming fifth place at both the 1990 and '91 championships. Four-year All-American and 1996 Olympian Annette Salmeen won the 200 fly in 1996, claiming UCLA's only NCAA individual title.
Zone E Diving Championships - Sophomore Anne Baghramian finished third on one- meter with a season-best mark of 402.80, qualifying her for her first NCAA championship. Other notable performances for the Bruins include Delilah More's seventh place mark on platform and Baghramian's seventh place finish on three- meter.
Bruins Finish Fifth At Pac-10s - UCLA took fifth place at the 1999 Women's Pac- 10 Swimming & Diving Championships with a score of 856.50. Junior All-American Keiko Price claimed the 100 free title and finished third in the 50 free. This is the 12th straight year UCLA has had an individual Pac-10 champion and the 24th overall individual Pac-10 title for the Bruins. UCLA competed well, with 17 swimmers recording career-best times.
The Future's So Bright - The 1999 UCLA freshmen class is one of the biggest and most talented in years. The 23 Bruin rookies have made a big impact for UCLA this season. UCLA's top times this season are held by freshmen in nine of 14 events. Seven of UCLA's 11 competitors at NCAAs are freshmen.
Anne Baghramian - Sophomore diver from Long Beach, Calif. (Chadwick School HS) . Totalled eight first-place finishes this season ... Finished third on one-meter (402.80), seventh on three-meter (465.30) and ninth on platform (305.00) at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships ... Finished with a team-best seventh place on platform and eighth place on three-meter at Pac-10s ... Claimed 11th place on one- meter at Pac-10s ... Holds UCLA's top scores on all but one event (see chart on page 2) ... Swept the one- and three-meter boards against Cal, UC San Diego, ASU and UCSB.
Nicole Beck - Freshman backstroker from Ventura, Calif. (Buena HS) ... Won five races this season ... Holds UCLA's season top-times in the 100 back (56.57) and the 200 back (2:00.27) ... Ranks sixth all-time at UCLA in the 200 back and seventh in the 100 back ... Finished in the top-five 20 times ... Placed 13th in both the 100 and 200 back at Pac-10s ... Finished second in the 200 back against both Stanford and Cal ... Claimed third place in both the 100 and 200 back vs. USC.
Angela Belloni - Freshman sprinter from Bellevue, Wash. (Sammamish HS) . Finished 17th in the 50 free and 24th in the 100 free at Pac-10s ... Member of UCLA's top 200, 400 and 800 free relay teams ... Finished in the top-five 13 times ... Her top finishes include first in the 50 free against San Diego and third against Stanford and USC.
Beth Goodwin - Sophomore All-American from Jarrettsville, Maryl. (North Harford HS) ... Recorded nine first-place finishes this season ... Holds UCLA's season top time in the 100 fly (54.68) ... Finished ninth in the 100 fly and 12th in the 100 free at Pac-10s ... Claimed first place in the 100 fly against Arizona, ASU, UC Santa Barbara, at the Husker Shoot Out and the Husky Invitational ... Member of UCLA's top 200 and 400 medley and 400 and 800 free relay teams.
Lyndee Hovsepian - Freshman breastroker from Rancho Mirage, Calif. (Cathedral City HS) ... Recorded seven first-places finishes ... Holds UCLA's top times this season in the 100 breast (1:02.41) and the 200 breast (2:16.06) ... Ranks third all-time at UCLA in the 200 breast and fourth in the 100 breast ... Finished fourth in the 100 breast, sixth in the 200 breast and 24th in the 200 IM at Pac- 10s ... Claimed first place in the 200 breast against Arizona and defending national champion Stanford ... Placed second in the 100 and 200 breast against USC and Cal.
Jen Noddle - Freshman breastroker and IM competitor from Brampton, Ontario (Mayfield S.S.) ... Won six races and totalled 30 top-five finishes this season . Ranks third all time at UCLA in the 200 IM (2:02.21), fourth in the 400 IM (4:20.78) and fifth in the 200 breast (2:16.66) ... Holds UCLA's top time this season in the 400 IM ... Finished sixth in the 400 IM, seventh in the 200 breast and 17th in the 200 IM at Pac-10s ... Placed second in the 400 IM against USC and Cal and in the 200 IM against Stanford.
Keiko Price - Junior two-year All-American from Mililani, Hawaii (Mililani HS) . Claimed the Pac-10 100 free title in a season-best time of 49.54 ... The title marked her first and the 24th overall for UCLA ... Finished third at Pac-10s in the 50 free and fifth in the 200 free ... Totalled 22 first-place finishes this season ... Finished first in the 50 free in all but two races ... Won first place in the 100 free in seven races and finished no lower than second overall ... Claimed first in the 50, 100 and 200 free and the 200 IM at the Husky Invitational . Holds UCLA's top times this season in the 50, 100 and 200 free and the 200 IM . Came .03 of a second away from tying the school record in the 200 IM at the Husky Invite ... Placed fourth at U.S. Nationals last summer in the 100 free, earning a spot on the U.S. roster for the '99 Pan-Pacific Games in Sydney.
Katie Ryan - Freshman sprinter from Federal Way, Wash. (Mt. Rainier HS) ... Holds UCLA's second-fastest 50 free time this season with a 23.55 mark set at Pac-10s ... Becky Thompson - Senior sprinter and middle distance swimmer from Chino Hills, Calif. (Walnut HS) ... Ranks second on the team this season in the 200 free with a 1:50.19 mark set at Pac-10s ... Recorded career-best marks in the 50, 100 and 200 free at Pac-10s and in the 500 free at the Husky Invitational ... Finished 14th in the 200 free, 17th in the 100 free and 21st in the 50 free at Pac-10s ... Recorded 15, top-five finishes this season ... Julia Voitovitsch - Freshman butterfly specialist from Frankfurt, Germany (Schule am Reid) ... Ranks second on the team in both the 100 and 200 fly .
