Palma de Mallorca, Spain - The U.S. lost its second game of the preliminary bracket at the World University Games Monday night, falling to Hungary, 12-7. Team captain Layne Beaubien led the team scoring with four, followed with single goals from UCLA junior Sean Kern, Bryan Heifferon and Brent Albright.
"We had a lot of trouble converting in our man-up situations," assistant coach Luis Nicolao explained. "Compounded with some mistakes in defense - we gave them some easy goals." Beaubien agreed. "The reason we lost is because we killed ourselves ... they capitalized on all of our mistakes."
Hungary's Bulscu Szekely scored at 5:37 in the first quarter - the first shot on goalie Merrill Moses. But Kern responded 30 seconds later by slamming one through goalie Zoltan Szegsi. At 1:35, Szekely returned to the goal again and slipped the ball past Moses. With only 25 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Beaubien tallied the first of his four-point total to tie the game, 2-2.
The beginning of the second quarter was encouraging for Team USA. Beaubien scored two in a row, at 6:11 and 5:23, giving the U.S. a two point lead. But Szekely didn't let the U.S. keep it for long, shrinking the gap to one point at 3:56 and finally tying up the game, 4-4 at 2:08.
Team USA never managed to regain their lead. In the third, Steimetz pushed Hungary out of the tie at 6:05, and Heifferon returned with a goal at 5:48, tying the game again at 5-5. Hungary nailed three goals at 5:26, 4:52 and 0:11, which were only answered by one for the U.S. - Beaubien's fourth goal at 3:37 - to bring the score to 8-6.
Hungary scored four goals in the fourth. Albright claimed the last goal for the U.S., scoring at 3:03.
Team USA battles Yugoslavia in the final game of the bracket Tuesday at UIB. The top three teams in each of the four brackets will advance.
