Ojai, Calif. - The UCLA men's tennis team had two players advance to the second round of the main singles draw Thursday in the opening round of play at the Pac-10 Championships at Ojai's Libbey Park.
Aaron Yovan advanced through the first round in straight sets, defeating Arizona Stat's TJ Bellama, 6-2, 7-5. He advances to face top-seeded Conor Niland of Cal in the second round. Mathieu Dehaine downed Arizona's Roger Matalonga, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, setting up a second-round meeting with Stanford's James Wan.
Chris Surapol and Philipp Gruendler lost first-round matches Thursday. Surapol dropped a hard fought battle with USC's Kaes Van't Hof, falling 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 7-6(5). Gruendler went down in three sets to Washington's Pierre Metenier, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
In the Pac-10 Invitational draw, Jason Nguyen won his first-round match when USC's Aaron Badart had to retire due to injury. Nguyen won the first set 7-6(3) and was leading 2-0 in the second at the time of Badart's retirement. He then lost to Washington's Klaus Jank, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. After receiving first-round byes, Jeremy Drean and Jaysen Chung were scheduled to play second-round matches late Thursday.
Doubles play begins Friday along with quarterfinal singles matches.
