After nine road matches to open the 2004 season, UCLA will take the floor in Pauley Pavilion for the first time this year when the Bruins play host to No. 3 Washington and Washington State this weekend to open Pac-10 play. Friday night's match will be broadcast by FOX Sports Net on a tape-delayed basis. The Bruins won both meetings against both Washington schools during the 2003 season. The Huskies are the only undefeated team remaining in the Pac-10 in 2004.

Bruins Split Matches in Utah
UCLA opened last weekend's action with a five-game loss at Utah, falling 15-12 in the fifth and deciding game of the match. UCLA had four players with double-figure kills in the contest, led by Brynn Murphy with 15. Sophomore Colby Lyman double-doubled against the Utes, turning in 14 kills and 16 digs, while senior libero Chrissie Zartman had a team-high 29 digs in the contest.

Playing the next night at BYU, UCLA was able to rebound, capitalizing on a 21-kill performance by Brittany Ringel and a 10-kill, .474 attack percentage night by Nana Meriwether, who also turned in a match-high seven blocks in the contest.

These matches marked the final pre-conference matches of the season for UCLA. The Bruins do have one additional non-conference opponent on their schedule, as UCLA hosts Pepperdine on Tuesday, October 26, in Pauley Pavilion.

In his 38th season on the Bruin bench, UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski remains one of the top coaches in his profession. On Sept. 1, 2001, he became the first collegiate women's volleyball coach in history to record 900 career wins, and is just the second collegiate volleyball coach for either gender to reach that milestone. UCLA men's coach Al Scates, for whom Banachowski was a setter during his collegiate career, posted his 1,000th career win in February, 2000. The first women's volleyball coach to be inducted into the National Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, MA, Banachowski currently has a career record of 970-246 (.798), and has coached the Bruins to six national championships, including three NCAA titles.
