Cyndi Gallagher's UCLA women's swimming team will open up the 2004-05 season this Saturday, Oct. 23 when it hosts Oregon State and UC Santa Barbara at the Men's Gym Pool at 11:30 am. Last season, the Bruins defeated UCSB 152.5-102.5 and Oregon State 148-108.
"This is a big meet for us because it's not only our first meet, but our first Pac-10 competition," said Gallagher. "UCSB and OSU areis good teams and will bring some tough competition into the pool."
The swim team returns four NCAA All-American from last year's team - Katie Arnold, Katie Nelson, Amy Thurman and Kim Vandenberg, as well as six NCAA Qualifiers - Katie Arnold, Jane Imagane, Katie Nelson, Kim Scarborough, Amy Thurman, and Kim Vandenberg.
This weekend UCLA's freshmen will get their first opportunity to swim in a Bruin uniform. Singapore Olympian Nicolette Teo and Japanese National Junior Team member Cheimi Yamamoto will lead this young group into the pool.
"This is the first opportunity for us to see where the freshman are out," said Gallagher. "It's exciting for the freshmen because you only get to swim in your first college meet once."
The UCLA swimming and diving team will travel to West Lafayette, IN for the Purdue Invitational November 5-6. The Bruins will return home November 19 and 20 for Pac-10 dual meets against Arizona State and Arizona respectively.
