Bruin Great Tyus Edney Among 16 USA Basketball Men's World Championship

Aug. 4, 2005

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Adding three players, while seeing two others drop off the previously announced 15-player Trials roster, 16 participants who last season played professionally in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), NBA Development League, or overseas, including UCLA great Tyus Edney, will gather in Miami, Fla., Friday for the start of the 2005 USA Basketball Men's World Championship Qualifying Team Trials.

The 16 professional basketball players will participate in the trials with an eye on earning one of the final 12 roster spots on the 2005 USA Basketball World Championship Qualifying squad. The USA team will compete Aug. 24-Sept. 4 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in the FIBA Americas Men's World Championship Qualifying Tournament. The top four finishing teams (in addition to Argentina who has already qualified by virtue of winning the 2004 Olympics) will earn their nation a qualifying berth in the 2006 FIBA World Championship that is being held in Japan.

In 1995, Edney, along with fellow seniors Ed O'Bannon and George Zidek, helped lead the Bruins, coached by Jim Harrick, to their 11th NCAA Championship. A three-time All-Pac-10 performer, Edney as a senior earned the Francis Pomeroy Naismith Award, given annually to the nation's best player under six-feet tall. In 1995, Edney, named the Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA West Regional, is famous for his last-seconds full-court dash and winning basket that propelled the Bruins to an NCAA second round victory over Missouri. As a senior, he was second on the team in scoring (14.3) and led UCLA in assists (6.8) and steals (2.3). In school history, Edney is ranked in 10, Top 10 categories, including games played (125, No. 9), assists (652, No. 2), steals (224, No. 2) and scoring (1515/12.1, No. 18). He also has the school record for most assists (11 vs. George Mason, 1994) in a game. Along with his overseas professional experience, Edney played four years in the NBA, last with Indiana (2001).

Added to the USA Trials roster were Tang Hamilton (Fayetteville-NBA Development League/Mississippi State '2001), Joe Shipp (Huntsville-NBA Development League/California '2003), the older brother of Bruin sophomore Josh Shipp and Isiah Victor (Roanoke-NBA Development League/ Tennessee '2001). Previously announced players who recently informed USA Basketball that they will not be able to participate include Michael Batiste (Panathinaikos-Greece/Arizona State '1999) and Melvin Sanders (Dakota-CBA/ Oklahoma State '2003). In addition to Hamilton, Shipp and Victor, players expected to participate in the USA Team trials will be: Jerome Beasley (Sioux Falls-CBA/North Dakota '2003); Charlie Bell (Leche Rio-Spain/Michigan State'2001); Ernest Brown (Fayetteville-NBA Development League/Indian Hills C.C.'2000); Tyus Edney (Lottomatica Roma-Italy/UCLA'1995); Corsley Edwards (Sioux Falls-CBA/Central Connecticut State'2002); Noel Felix (Yakima-CBA/Fresno State'2003); Lynn Greer (Dynamo Moscow-Russia/ Temple'2002); Jimmie Hunter (Sebastiani Rieti-Italy/Life '2000); Kris Lang (Unicaja Malaga-Spain/North Carolina'2002); Aaron McGhee (Pusan KTF-Korea/Oklahoma'2002); Marque Perry (Olympicos-Greece/Saint Louis'2003); Alex Scales (Samsung-Korea/ Oregon'1999); and Ron Slay (Asheville-NBA Development League/ Tennessee '2003).

Of the 16 players expected to participate in the Trials, in 2004-05 five played in the NBA Development League, three in the CBA, six were with professional teams in Europe, including Edney, and two played in the Korean Basketball League (KBL). Four of the finalists boast of previous USA Basketball experience. Edney was a member of the 1994 USA Goodwill Games Team that captured bronze in St. Petersburg, Russia; Greer was a part of the 2001 USA World University Games Team that won bronze in Beijing, China; Lang, while a UNC Tar Heel, participated in the 1999 USA Basketball National Team Trials and Shipp was a member of the 1998 USA Basketball Youth Development Festival silver medalist West Team.

The USA Team's trials and training will be conducted at the Miami Heat practice facility inside American Airlines Arena. The first trials session will be held on Friday, Aug. 5, from 5-7 p.m. (all times local). Sessions on Aug. 6 and 8 will be held 10 a.m.-12 noon and 5-7 p.m., with sessions on Aug. 7 and 9 slated for 1-4 p.m.
