Mission Bay - San Diego, Calif. - The UCLA women's rowing team completed Day 1 of the 31st Annual San Diego Crew Classic today, advancing the varsity and novice eight boats into the Grand Finals for the second consecutive year. The UCLA second varsity eight finished third in their heat to advance to the Petite Finals.
The UCLA varsity eight defeated Louisville, Central Florida, Southern Methodist, University of San Diego, Temple, and St. Mary's to advance to the Women's Cal Cup Grand Final tomorrow. The crew finished in 6:53.83, 3-seconds ahead of Louisville. UCLA will compete against Miami, Clemson, Loyola Marymount, Navy, and Louisville for in the Grand Final race scheduled for 1:50 p.m.
The Bruin second varsity eight competed in Heat A of the Women's JV event and finished third behind Washington State and Wisconsin. UCLA defeated Stanford, Sacramento State, Loyola Marymount, and Southern Methodist in that race. The Bruins posted a time of 7:06.66 and advanced to the Women's JV Petite Final, where they will compete against Stanford, Texas, Kansas State, Notre Dame, and Clemson. The race is scheduled for 10:20 a.m.
The UCLA novice eight finished second behind Washington in the prelims but still advanced to the Grand Final race tomorrow. The Bruins (7:19.20) defeated UC Davis, USC, San Diego State, Sonoma State, and Chapman in that race. They will compete against Washington, Oregon State, Washington State, Clemson, and Wisconsin tomorrow in the Grand Final race scheduled for 10:50 a.m.
