Senior Jeremy Silverman and junior Mike Landers led a small contingent of Bruin men at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational in La Jolla, CA on Saturday as both posted men top-five finishes in their respective events.
Silverman, who has battled back from a severe ankle sprain had a breakout meet, posting a four foot season-best and regional qualifying toss of 60-3 in the shot put. He placed fifth overall, but was the No. 2 collegiate finisher in the competition.
Landers was the top collegiate finisher in the pole vault (third overall) with a jump of 17-4.50. Junior David Shortenhaus picked up his regional qualifier with a season-best vault of 16-6.75 to finish seventh overall. Sophomore Zack Miller was 11th with a mark of 16-0.75.
In the discus competition, the Bruins found some very favorable winds as a lifetime-best and two season-best marks were achieved. Sophomore Greg Garza picked up a new lifetime-best with a throw of 186-10, improving nearly eight feet on his season-best mark (178-11) to finish 13th overall. Sophomore John Caulfield finished 18th with a throw of 184-4. Junior Jason Rider picked up a new season-best mark with a throw of 182-10 to finish 19th overall, while Silverman also picked up a season-best mark, throwing 165-9.
Freshmen Alex Pearlstone (22.18) and Garland West (22.50) ran season-best times in the 200m. West also ran a season-best 11.04 in the 100m, while Pearlstone ran 11.28. In the 400m, sophomore David Shipp ran 49.33.
Sophomore James Rhoades, competing in an off event, ran 1:54.02 in the 800m.
The Bruins will return home to host USC in the annual dual meet showdown on Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29. The hammer competition will be on Friday, with the remainder of the meet running on Saturday. The meet will be televised live on Fox Sports Prime Ticket from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm on Saturday.
