For the second consecutive year, a Bruin diver has been named the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year, as freshman Marisa Samaniego was honored by the Pac-10 Conference after an impressive first year at UCLA. Last year, then freshman Brittany Renfrow earned the Newcomer award.
In just her first year at UCLA, Samaniego qualified and competed at the NCAA Championships. Samaniego finish fifth on the one-meter and ninth on the three-meter springboard event at the 2006 Pac-10 Diving Championships. At the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships, Samaniego was UCLA's highest finisher, placing eighth on 1M with a total score of 521.40 points. At the NCAA Championships, she placed 38th on the one-meter and 32nd on the three-meter springboard.
Also earning Pac-10 honors were USC's Blythe Hartley (Diver of the Year) and USC Coach HongPing Lee (Coach of the Year).
