Softball and Baseball Players Earn All-Academic Honors
By: UCLA Athletics

June 19, 2001

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Four members of the UCLA baseball team have been named to the All-Academic team as honorable mention selections, as announced yesterday by Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen. To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and either be a starter or significant substitute. Two members of the NCAA Runner-Up UCLA softball team were also named to the Pac-10 All-Academic Team, as juniors Stacey Nuveman and Erin Rahn were both Honorable Mention selections.

Nuveman, the Pac-10 Player of the Year and first-team All-American at catcher, led the Pac-10 in three offensive categories, including batting average (.440), slugging percentage (.873) and on-base percentage (.615) and was in the conference top-five in five additional categories (walks, RBI, home runs, doubles and total bases).

Rahn, a junior from San Diego, CA, played in 54 of UCLA's 68 games and had a .917 fielding percentage with only one error as a left fielder for the Bruins.

Senior Josh Canales (Carson, CA/Carson HS) had an incredible season, finishing with a ,376 batting average. The second basemen hit .421 in Pac-10 play, and finished the season on a 24 game hitting streak. He hit safely in 39 of his last 40 games and earned All-Pac-10 honors. He led the team in sacrifice hits, and tied for the lead in stolen bases. His .376 average was eighth in the Pac-10. Canales was drafted in the 16th round of the 2001 draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, and will begin his professional career with the Great Falls Dodgers.

Eric Reece (El Dorado Hills, CA/Oak Ridge HS) led the team in home runs with 10, good for sixth in the conference. The senior first baseman was second on the team with 44 RBI, and finished the season with 14 doubles. Reece graduated on Sunday and will start his professional baseball career this week with the Hudson Valley Renegades, an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Mike Kunes (Chatsworth, CA/Chatsworth HS) was one of UCLA's top relievers, finishing the season with a 3-2 record and a 3.55 ERA in 45.2 innings. The sophomore left-hander recorded 25 strikeouts and picked up one save.

Adam Berry (Richardson, TX/J.J. Pearce HS) started 35 games in left field and led the team in triples. The junior recorded five home runs, including a three-run blast in the bottom of the ninth inning to give UCLA a 4-3 win over USC. He also had several game-winning RBI and was a clutch performer.
