LOS ANGELES, Calif.-Freshman driver Brett Ormsby (El Cajon/Valhalla) scored four times and helped UCLA's men's water polo team cruise to a 12-2 victory over UC Irvine Saturday at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The match was the season opener for both teams.
Brandon Brooks (Jr., Honolulu, HI/Punahou) tallied 13 saves as the anchor of the Bruin defense. The Anteaters were held scoreless for the first 19 minutes, 50 seconds of the game as UCLA built an 8-0 lead.
"This was a definite surprise," Bruin head coach Adam Krikorian said. "Our team defense was outstanding. With a young team, it'll be interesting to see how consistent we'll be as we go along."
Both teams' offenses were slow to get untracked. After Ormsby scored in the opening minute, Dan Yeilding (Sr., San Clemente) took advantage of an extra-man situation with 20 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. The Bruins' lead grew to 5-0 by halftime, and 10-1 after three periods. Brooks made seven saves in the final quarter to preserve UCLA's defensive effort.
Matt Flesher (Jr., Diamond Bar/Brea Olinda), Jeff Pflueger (Sr., Santa Ana/Foothill), and Ted Peck (Fr., Irvine/University) each tallied twice for UCLA, while Alfonso Tucay (Sr., Burbannk/Burroughs) scored once.
