UCLA Finishes First Among U.S. Collegiate Crews at Head of the Charles Regatta

BOSTON, Mass. - Participating in the event for the first time during UCLA's current affiliation with the NCAA, the Bruins' women's rowing team finished first among all U.S. Collegiate crews at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta Sunday afternoon in Boston. The Head of the Charles Regatta, the world's largest two-day rowing event, featured 20 teams in the championship four event, including several international and club boats.

The Bruin crew, comprised of stroke Jessica Rogers, three seat co-captain Monica Grova, two seat Elizabeth Felter, bow seat Lauren Hamann and coxswain Emina Ong, finished ahead of other previously ranked American teams including Yale, Princeton, Michigan and Brown. UCLA's final elapsed time of 14:06.142 was good for fifth place overall and just slightly behind the London Training Center's winning mark of 13:32.448.

Returning seniors Rogers, Grova, Felter, Hamann and Ong were selected to partcipate based on the fact that they were all four year rowers who each began their careers at UCLA as freshman in 2001. The Bruins' next competition is scheduled for November 14 at the Head of the Lake in Seattle, Washington. Head Coach Amy Fuller and Assistant Coach Bill Zack will send one eight to again compete against nationally ranked competitors. The Bruins will begin the spring portion of their 2004-2005 schedule on March 12, 2005 against Loyola Marymount at the UCLA Boathouse in Marina Del Rey.
