UCLA Leads USC by Two Strokes at Pac-10 Championship

April 18, 2005

The second-ranked UCLA women's golf team took the first-round lead Monday at the 19th Pac-10 Women's Golf Championship, held at Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton and hosted by California.

The Bruins fired an opening round score of 289 (+1) and led USC by two strokes. Arizona State and Washington were tied for third at 298 (+10) followed by Washington State in fifth at 299 (+11). Arizona was sixth at 300 (+12), Stanford was seventh at 304 (+16) and Cal was eighth at 305 (+17). Oregon and Oregon State were ninth (308) and 10th (327), respectively.

UCLA junior Susie Mathews torched the 6,304-yard par 72 Ruby Hill GC for a 68 (-4) and led the field after 18 holes. She carded five birdies on the day, including one at the 18th hole, and led ASU's Louise Stahle by a stroke entering the second round.

Senior Charlotte Mayorkas, the defending Pac-10 champion, and freshman Amie Cochran are tied for seventh after posting rounds of 73 (+1). Early in their rounds, both players were forced to rally after losing two strokes to par. Cochran brought her score to one-under before bogies at 17 and 18 produced a 73. Mayorkas was even par after 14 holes, but a bogey at the par 4 15th gave her a 37 on the inward nine.

Junior Hannah Jun was tied for 14th place after posting a 75 (+3) and senior Melissa Martin was tied for 19th after carding a 76 (+4).

Second round action continues Tuesday.
