Bruins to Compete at 30th Annual San Diego Crew Classic Regatta

Los Angeles - The UCLA women's rowing team travels to Mission Bay, Calif., this weekend, April 5-6, to compete in the 30th Annual San Diego Crew Classic Regatta. Showcasing over 3,300 athletes ranging from juniors to masters to Olympians, the San Diego Crew Classic is America's premier spring rowing regatta.

On Saturday, April 5, the first race begins at 7:00 a.m with the last race scheduled to end around 5:00 p.m. The Bruins have entered three boats in the weekend's events: a varsity eight, a second varsity eight, and a novice eight. The UCLA varsity eight is scheduled to compete at 7:30 a.m. in Heat A of the Women's Cal Cup. The UCLA second varsity eight is scheduled to compete at 10:10 a.m. in Heat A of the Women's JV, and the UCLA novice eight is scheduled to compete at 11:15 a.m. in Heat B of the Women's Collegiate Novice race.

Last Year at the San Diego Crew Classic
The UCLA varsity eight placed third in the 3RD Final and finished 15th overall in the Women's Cal Cup. The UCLA second varsity eight placed fourth in the 3RD Final to finish 16th overall. The Bruin novice eight, who qualified for the Women's Collegiate Novice Grand Final for the first time in over ten years, placed sixth.


UCLA at the San Diego Crew Classic
UCLA women's rowing has competed at the San Diego Crew Classic since the regatta was founded in 1973. The Bruins won the 1984 Women's Lightweight 4+ and the 1985 Women's Novice 8+. In 1991, the last year UCLA Athletics sponsored the sport, the Bruin varsity eight turned in a second-place showing in the Whittier Cup.


Last Week
The Bruins defeated Loyola Marymount for the 2003 Karen Hock Hjelm-Cup. The UCLA first and second novice eights finished ahead of LMU to sweep the novice races and the UCLA varsity eight finished 4-seconds ahead of the Lions to win the cup for the first time since it was founded in 2001. The series is now 1-2, and the Bruins improve to 2-0 in dual meets for the season.
