This week -- The No. 13 UCLA Women's Rowing team will be competing in the 30th annual Norman P. Miller Cup Women's Invitational Regatta held this Saturday, April 16, at Marina Del Rey's Ballona Creek. The Miller Cup is hosted by the UCLA Men's Rowing team as a fund-raiser for their program. The first preliminary heat will begin at 7a.m, with the event culminating at 10a.m with the novice eight grand final.
The Bruins will be competing against Loyola Marymount, San Diego State, University of San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine on Saturday. Each team will be entering a boat in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight events. There will be two preliminary heats for each of the events, with the two winning boats and the second place finisher with the fastest time advancing to the grand final. The remaining three boats will compete in the petite final for that event. The winner of the varsity eight grand final will be presented with the 2005 Miller Cup.
Miller Cup Notes The Miller Cup is one of UCLA's oldest and valued traditions, established in 1976. The cup was named in honor of the then vice-chancellor Dr. Norman P. Miller for his commitment and dedication to UCLA Women's Rowing.
UCLA has won the Miller Cup 15 times in the last 28 years. Last year, both the UCLA Bruins and the LMU Lions claimed the cup when the two squads finished in a dead heat in the Miller Cup race.
