Chattanooga, Tenn. - Senior men's tennis player Alberto Francis won both of his singles matches Thursday, advancing to the round of 16 at the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Tennis Championships.
Francis, unseeded in the 64-player draw, started the day off by upsetting ninth-seeded Adrians Zguns or Arkansas, 6-2, 6-2. He then posted a second-round victory over Oregon's Manuel Kost, 6-1, 7-6(5). Next up for Francis will be Old Dominion's Izak Van Der Merwe, who is seeded fifth.
Two other Bruin singles players didn't fare as well Thursday, as both Chris Lam and Kris Kwinta dropped first-round matches. Lam fell to No. 9 Mark Van Elden of Oklahoma State, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3. Kwinta was ousted by Minnesota's Avery Ticer, 6-4, 6-4.
UCLA's only doubles entrant also fell in the first round Thursday, as third-seeded Francis and Kwinta were upset by Ryler DeHeart and GD Jones of Illinois, 9-8(4).
