WESTWOOD - The eighth-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team posted a three-game sweep of No. 3 Arizona on Friday night in Pauley Pavilion, downing the Wildcats in just over 90 minutes. Game scores were 30-27, 30-27, 30-19. With the win, the Bruins improve to 6-2 overall, 1-1 in the Pac-10. Arizona falls to 7-1, 2-1 Pac-10.
The first two games of the match were hard-fought, as evidenced by the game scores of 30-27. In game one, neither team took more than a four-point lead, and the score was tied as late as 27-27 before a kill by Angela Eckmier and two kills by Ashley Bowles closed it out for the Bruins.
In game two, the Wildcats sprinted out to an early 4-1 lead before the Bruins the Bruins tied it back up at 9-9. From there, the Bruins had the lead to stay, taking a lead as large as eight points (26-18) and closed out the game at 30-27.
Game three was tied as late as 9-9 before the Bruins took control. Kristee Porter downed six of her match-high 20 kills in the third game, and notched her fourth service ace of the match, a new career-high for her. In the third and final game of the match, the Bruins hit a scorching .571 as a team, recording only one error with 17 kills and 28 attacks.
Two Bruins, Porter and Bowles, posted double-figure digs in the match, Porter with 20 and Bowles with 11. Junior middle blocker Angela Eckmier also turned in an impressive performance, downing eight kills on a .583 attack percentage to go along with a match-high five block assists.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday evening with a 7 pm first serve against Arizona State. The match will be broadcast live on www.uclabruins.com with Lou Riggs, Paul Nihipali and Jerry Weinstein calling the action.
