BRUINS LOOK TO STRETCH THEIR WIN STREAK TO SEVEN AS THEY TRAVEL TO STANFORD:
UCLA (12-4, 4-0 MPSF) will look to keep its unbeaten mark in conference action when it travels to Stanford (12-3) this weekend. The teams will face-off at 10:00 a.m. in a MPSF match-up at Avery Aquatic Center prior to the start of the UCLA vs. Stanford football game.
The Cardinal and Bruins have met once before this season with Stanford claiming a 7-4 victory in the second round of the Nor Cal Tournament. Junior Tony Azevedo leads the Cardinal attack this season with 50 goals in only 15 matches. Goalkeeper Chad Taylor has tallied 89 saves in his 13 starts in 2003.
UCLA FACES OFF WITH SANTA CLARA AND UCSC IN SANTA CRUZ:
On Sunday, the Bruins will take a break from MPSF competition with a pair of matches at UC Santa Cruz. At 11:00 a.m., UCLA will take on 17th-ranked Santa Clara (15-10) and then host host UC Santa Cruz (14-17) at 3:00 p.m.
The Broncos are coming off back-to-back losses at the UC Davis Shootout last weekend, while the Banana Slugs are ranked third in the Division III poll.
BRUINS UPSET TOP-RANKED USC, DEFEAT UCSB IN PAIR OF MPSF MATCHES:
Peter Belden scored with eight seconds remaining in the first overtime period to lift UCLA to a 6-5 win over top-ranked USC in front of a full house at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. Goalkeeper Joe Axelrad posted nine saves as the Bruins defeated the top-ranked team in the nation for the second consecutive week.
On Saturday, nine second half goals led the Bruins past UC Sant Barbara, 12-6. Seven different Bruins scored in the contest, including Brett Ormsby, who recorded his seventh hat trick of the season in the win.
Michael March NAMED MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
After scoring the game-winning goal against top-ranked California, Michael March was named the Mikasa/MPSF Player of the Week. It was the second such award in his career and the first for him and UCLA this season.
BRUINS IN THE POLL:
The Bruins remained in the fifth ranking in last week's Collegiate Coaches Water Polo Poll despite upsetting top-ranked California. The poll is released every Wednesday during the season and can be found at www.collegiatewaterpolo.org.
