Al Scates Selected AVCA National Coach of the Year

LOS ANGELES - UCLA men's volleyball coach Al Scates was selected today as the 1998 Tachikara/AVCA National Coach of the Year.

Scates guided the Bruins to their 17th NCAA championship, setting a national record for most titles won by a coach in a single sport.The Bruins finished the season with a 26-4 record after earning their sixth consecutive berth to NCAA Tournament. Scates also was voted AVCA Coach of the Year in 1984, '87, '93 and '96. His Bruins finished the season as the undisputed No.1 team in the USA TODAY/AVCA Coaches Top 15 poll.

The most successful coach in the game, Scates leads all collegiate coaches in all divisions with his 946-147 record. The Bruins boasted three players on the 1998 AVCA All-America Teams -- sophomores Brandon Taliaferro and Adam Naeve and senior Ben Moselle. Scates has coached 10 different players to 20 AVCA All-America honors.
