UCLA track announces four recruits who signed early National Letters of Intent. All four will be incoming Bruin freshmen next fall.
Alejandra Barrientos (San Lorenzo V, Felton, CA) - A postseason leg stress fracture suffered at the California State meet didn't keep Barrientos from earning 2000 Track & Field News prep All-America honors. Last spring, T & F News ranked her as the nation's No. 2 miler and the No. 5 3200m performer, both All-America status. Her best marks were 4:48.27 in the mile (No. 3 high school mark in the U. S. last spring) and 10:11.19 in the 3200m (No. 1 in the U. S.). During the 1999-2000 prep season, Barrientos won the State Cross Country title and in track, captured the Arcadia 1600m and 3200m individual championships.
Briona Reynolds (Red River HS, Grand Forks, ND ) - Reynolds earned T & F News prep All-America honors in the discus, rated as the nation's No. 1 high school discus performer, with a best of 179-1. Last spring, she won the women's discus at the North Dakota State, Golden West, National Scholastic and USA Junior Championships. Reynolds' shot put mark of 48-2 1/4 was No. 7 in the U. S. In T & F News balloting for the Women's 2000 HS Athlete of the Year, Reynolds was fifth in the voting .
Robert Hambleton (Loyola HS) - Looking to provide sprint depth to the men's program, Hambleton, a 100m/200m performer, qualified for the CIF Finals last season and was an All-League selection.
Chadd Smith (Camarillo, CA HS) - Before being sidelined by off-season knee surgery, Smith last spring won the high jump at Arcadia and placed third in the CA State meet. Smith is a leading contender for U. S. and State high jump prep honors this spring.
