Women's Tennis Heads to Malibu for NCAA Regionals

UCLA Heads to Pepperdine for NCAA Regionals . . .
The No. 19-ranked UCLA women's tennis team (13-6) travels to Malibu, Calif. this week for NCAA Regional action at Pepperdine University. The Bruins will take on San Diego State (16-8) in the first round on Friday at 3:00 p.m. The other first-round match that day will be No. 13-seeded Pepperdine (20-3) vs. Wichita State (17-7). Friday's winners will meet in the second round on Saturday at 3:00 p.m., with the winning team advancing on to the round of 16 in Stanford, Calif.

Four Bruin Singles Players, One Doubles Team Selected for NCAA Individual Duty . . .
UCLA had four players earn at-large selections into the 64-player singles draw at the NCAA Championships. The individual tournament, which begins one day after the team competition on May 23, will feature Laura Gordon, Riza Zalameda, Tracy Lin and Alex McGoodwin. In addition, Gordon and Zalameda have been selected to compete in the 32-team doubles draw. UCLA's last NCAA singles champion was Keri Phebus in 1995. Daniela Bercek and Lauren Fisher were the last Bruin doubles team to win it all, achieving the feat in 2004.

Last Year at the Championships . . .
UCLA was selected as a No. 10 seed in the 2005 NCAA Championships, earning the right to host first and second round action at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. After posting a pair of 4-0 decisions over Illinois State and Washington, the Bruins advanced to the round of 16 in Athens, Ga. Once in Georgia however, UCLA dropped a close 4-3 decision to cross-town rival USC. Individually, Riza Zalameda advanced to the semifinals in the singles draw at the NCAAs, falling to third-seeded Audra Cohen of Northwestern, 6-4, 6-4. In doubles, Daniela Bercek and Zalameda advanced to the quarterfinals as the No. 4 seed.

Joelson Takes Invitational Singles Title at Pac-10 Championships . . .
Freshman Ashley Joelson took home her first title as a Bruin two weeks ago in Ojai, Calif., as she won the Invitational singles crown at the Pac-10 Championships. Joelson, the No. 2 seed, downed top-seeded Jessica Nguyen of Stanford, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to win the title. She won four straight matches in the tournament, dropping just one set. In doubles, Laura Gordon and Riza Zalameda advanced to the semifinals of the main draw, while Joelson and Tracy Lin reached the semifinals of the Invitational draw.

Final 2006 Pac-10 Standings . . .
Stanford claimed this year's Pac-10 title with a perfect 8-0 record. USC finished second with a 7-1 mark, followed by third place Cal (6-2) and fourth place UCLA (5-3). ASU (5th - 4-4), Arizona (6th - 3-5), Oregon (7th - 2-6), Washington State (8th - 1-7) and Washington (9th - 0-8) round out the rest of the standings.

UCLA Listed No. 19 in Final Regular Season Rankings . . .
UCLA checked in at No. 19 in the final Fila/ITA Team Rankings of the regular season released on May 1. Individual rankings were also released, and Laura Gordon is UCLA's highest ranked singles player at No. 21. She is followed by No. 46 Tracy Lin, No. 54 Riza Zalameda, No. 56 Alex McGoodwin and No. 94 Ashley Joelson. In addition, Gordon and Riza Zalameda are ranked No. 12 in doubles, while Lumpkin and McGoodwin check in at No. 47. New team and individual rankings will not be released again until after the NCAA Championships.

Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is in her 10th season as the head coach of the UCLA women's tennis team. She owns a career record of 163-89 (.647). In her first nine seasons at UCLA, Sampras Webster guided the Bruins to eight top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including five top-5 showings (1997, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004). In 2004, she led UCLA to the NCAA Finals for the first time since 1991. It also marked the first time since 1991 that the Bruins surpassed the 20-win mark, finishing with a 21-8 overall record.
