CHARLOTTESVILLE - The No. 3-ranked UCLA women's soccer team dropped its first match of 2004 Friday evening, falling to No. 9 Virginia, 3-1 at the University of Virginia Nike Classic.
Virginia's Lindsay Gusick scored twice and Sarah Curtis added another goal for the Cavaliers, who improved to 5-0 on the season. UCLA falls to 3-1 with the loss.
Gusick got the Cavaliers on the board in the 18th minute as a ball deflected off a Bruin defender to her and she dribbled into the box and blasted the ball into the net. Curtis made the score 2-0 as she one-timed a Jessica Trainor cross for a goal just before halftime. In the second half, Gusick struck again as Shannon Foley's through ball found her in stride behind the Bruin defense. She dribbled the ball around the charging UCLA keeper and placed it in the vacated net. Bruin junior Jill Oakes scored late for UCLA, snapping the Cavaliers' 611:37 shutout streak, dating back to last season. That streak is the second longest in school history.
Gusick's two goal performance vaulted her higher in the Cavalier record book. She jumped from tenth to sixth all-time in scoring, now with 78 points, and ninth to seventh all-time in goals (31) during tonight's game.
Overall, Virginia outshot UCLA 13-8 in the contest. Christina de Vries had a career-high four saves. Valerie Henderson also made four saves for UCLA.
"Tonight was a good result against a team that is going to post a lot of wins this year" said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. "We played solid defense again and did what we needed to do to create chances on the offensive end."
In the first game of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic, Maryland rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to post a 5-2 victory over South Carolina. The tournament concludes Sunday at Klöckner Stadium as Maryland and UCLA meet at noon and Virginia hosts South Carolina at 2:30 p.m.
