This Week In Water Polo: The No. 2 Bruins (7-1 overall, 3-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) are off to a roaring start in '98, and will take this rare bye weekend to prepare for the Northern California Tournament, to be held October 17 and 18 at Stanford. UCLA is scheduled to join the top ten teams in the country at the annual tournament.
Last Week's Recap: The Bruins extended their undefeated conference standing on Friday, October 2, with a 5-4 MPSF victory over defending national champion Pepperdine. UCLA grabbed the hard-fought win when senior co-captain Sam Grayeli (Costa Mesa, Costa Mesa HS) scored the game-winning goal with 1:17 remaining in a tied game. Grayeli, playing against his younger brother Robert, a member of the Pepperdine squad, also tallied two steals and forced an offensive turnover. Five Bruins scored the team's five goals; Grayeli, and sophomores Andy Bailey (San Clemente, San Clemente HS), Brian Brown (Santa Ana, Foothill HS), Dave Parker (Orinda, Miramonte HS), and Adam Wright (Seal Beach, Wilson HS). Junior goalkeeper Parsa Bonderson (Santa Barbara, San Marcos HS) pulled down eight saves and limited the Waves to two man-advantage goals.
Who To Watch: The Bruins are outscoring opponents 63-44, thanks largely to sophomore Sean Kern's team-leading 19 goals. Kern (Honolulu, HI, Punahou HS), was last season's leading scorer and earned third-team All-MPSF and All-America honors. Parker follows Kern on the squad's scoring list, with 10 points and a current four-game scoring streak. Wright, the number three scorer (7 points), has netted goals in five of UCLA's eight games, and also leads the team in steals, with 13. Sophomore Blake Wellen (Mill Valley, Tamalpais HS) is on Wright's heels with 12 steals, and is the squad leader in assists, with 9.
