Walnut Creek, CA - UCLA senior guard Michelle Greco has been named the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 6-12, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Greco, from LaCrescenta, Calif., led UCLA to its sixth straight win with 28 points in a 72-64 victory over rival USC Jan. 12 at Pauley Pavilion. She shot 8-of-16 from the field (.500) and was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line in 40 minutes of play. The Bruins have won five consecutive Pac-10 games, their best start since beginning the 1999-2000 Conferenc season at 6-0.
Greco posted seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot, and scored the Bruins' final eight points. With 1:41 left and UCLA leading 65-64, Greco made a layup, was fouled and connected on the free throw. After a USC miss, she was fouled with 33 seconds left and made both free throws to put the Bruins ahead, 70-64. Greco finished the scoring by draining two free throws with six seconds on the clock.
UCLA (10-4 overall, 5-0 Pac-10) hits the road this week for Pac-10 games at Arizona State (Jan. 16) and Arizona (Jan. 18). Entering the week, Greco, the 2001 Pac-10 scoring champion, paces the league with a 19.8 scoring average. Her 2.86 steals per game leads the Conference, and she ranks fifth in free throw percentage (.812).
The Player of the Week honor is the first of Greco's career, the 26th all-time selection for UCLA and the Bruins' first such honor since the 1999-2000 season.
