After Day One of the 2005 Pac-10 Multi-Events at UCLA's Drake Stadium UCLA junior David Murphy is in seventh-place with 3,135 points. In just his second-ever decathlon, Murphy's five event (100m/long jump/shot put/high jump/400m) point total of 3,135 points is also a lifetime best. In the 100m, he ran an 11.77 (697 points/eighth overall); a personal-best 20-3.25 (626 points/eighth overall) in the long jump; his shot put mark was 33-0.50 (490 points/ninth overall); a leap of 6-4.75 (758 points/tied for second overall) in the high jump and in the 400m, Murphy ran a 55.88 (564 points/seventh overall).
The decathlon leader is Washington State junior Darion Powell, with a first-day total of 3,889 points. He was the leader in three of the five events - 100m (11.13/832 points), long jump (season-best 23-0.50/818 points) and shot put (47-3.50 (753 points).
In second-place is Arizona sophomore Jake Arnold (3,728 points) and in third-place is Oregon junior Cody Fleming (3,669 points).
The 2005 Pac-10 Multi-Events (heptathlon -long jump/javelin/800m) and decathlon -100m hurdles/discus/pole vault/javelin/1500m) will conclude Sunday. Team scoring for both the women and men's events is based on eight places (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1).
