LOS ANGELES - Eric Peterson's UCLA women's cross country team and Bob Larsen's Bruin men's squad next competition will be Saturday, Sept. 18, running at the Aztec Invitational, held at Balboa Park in San Diego and hosted by San Diego State.
Both Bruin teams opened the season with victories on Saturday, Sept. 4, winning the women's and men's team titles at the CS Fullerton Invite, held at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea.
UCLA's women won their division (16 teams) with 18 points, followed by San Diego State (105), UNLV (107), Concordia (108) and Long Beach State (146). The Bruin men won their team title (10 teams) with 44 points, followed by host CS Fullerton (56), Cal Poly-Pomona (97), Long Beach State (98) and UC San Diego (119).
The Bruin women at the CS Fullerton Invite had six runners in the Top 10, including a one-two-three finish. The women's 5,000m race was won by Bruin sophomore Elaine Canchola (17:41.20), followed by junior Kelly Cohn (17:42.70) and senior Kara Barnard (17:54.10).
UCLA's men placed three runners in the Top 15, including two in the Top 10. Bruin senior Dan Brecht was second (25:37.40) over the 8,000m course and junior Scott Abbott was sixth (25:53.60).
Following the CS Fullerton Invite, the Bruin teams traveled to Mammoth Lakes for a distance training camp that will last almost two weeks.
