LOS ANGELES - On the heels of its showdown with No. 9 USC tomorrow, the seventh-ranked UCLA women's tennis team dispatched of UC Irvine, 7-0 Thursday in a non-conference match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, the Bruins improve to 3-0 on the season, while UC Irvine falls to 1-2.
Similar to its two previous matches this year, UCLA took care of the doubles point, taking a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
In singles action, Bruin freshman Susi Wild turned in the most impressive performance of the afternoon, defeating UCI's Christie Posner, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
In the top singles position, No. 6-ranked Sara Walker dropped just one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 decision over UCI's Jenny Bowman. Three other Bruins posted singles victories without too much trouble, as Jackie Carleton, Sarah Gregg and Anya Loncaric were also straight-set winners.
At No. 5 singles, Bruin freshman Laura Gordon battled back from a set down to defeat Amy Tranckino, 3-6, 7-6(2), 1-0 (10-8). A 10-point tiebreaker was played instead of a third set.
UCLA's showdown with USC tomorrow will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The battle for the Lexus Gauntley Trophy between UCLA and USC is currently tied at 25-25.
