Los Angeles - Despite taking an early 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point, the No. 8 UCLA women's tennis team dropped four of six singles matches, falling to No. 15 USC, 4-3 Thursday in the Pac-10 opener for both teams at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the loss, UCLA falls to 8-2 overall and 0-1 in the Pac-10. The Women of Troy improve to 8-4 and 1-0 in conference play.

Down 0-1 following doubles play, USC quickly tied the match at one apiece after Tiffany Brymer defeated UCLA's Lauren Fisher, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. The Bruins quickly answered back however, as Megan Bradley registered a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jewel Peterson at No. 1 singles. Shortly thereafter, USC tied the match up again as Maureen Diaz defeated UCLA's Petya Marinova, 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 3 position.

With the match tied at 2-2, all three remaining singles matches then went into a third set. The Bruins took a 3-2 lead after Catherine Hawley, who was down 1-4 in the third set, came back to defeat USC's Melissa Esmero, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 6 singles. Just a few minutes later, USC's Luana Magnani knocked off Sara Walker, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to tie the score at 3-3.

USC's Anita Loyola then clinched the victory for the Women of Troy in the No. 4 position, defeating UCLA's Sarah Gregg, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(8).

With the victory, USC avenges its 5-2 loss to UCLA back on Feb. 1 at USC.

The Bruins return to the court this Saturday to host Oregon at the LATC beginning at Noon.
