After an early 7:00 a.m. breakfast in the hotel, we drove to the tennis center for our morning practice session. It was great for the team to be playing tennis at 9:00 a.m. because that is the time our match is tomorrow. This let the players get used to the morning weather, faint dampness of the tennis courts, morning shadows, temperature and humidity.
We started off with some two-on-one drills and warm-up exercises, followed with some singles drills. Each player on the team has little quirks and pre-match routines they do the day before competition to prepare for the match and today was no exception. Tobi practiced with Travis because Tobi will most likely play a left-hander tomorrow. Marcin did some groundstroke drills with Jason Sher and Alberto likes to work on his return of serve.
We ended the practice session with some doubles points and drills. I was pleased with the guys and the way they played this morning and the intensity they had during practice. Everyone had a very good workout and has been playing well.
We headed back to the hotel around 11:15 where everyone showered and walked into town to get some lunch. This small little restaurant called "Little Italy" has very good sandwiches reasonably priced so the players have been going every day for lunch. I headed off to take care of some small errands, pick up some groceries for the match and then had the customary tournament coaches meeting to go over the basic rules and any new changes for this weekend.
Tonight was the annual tournament team banquet to kick-off the beginning of the 119th NCAA Men's Tennis Championships. Over the years, these banquets have slowly gotten shorter and shorter to help all the players get a good nights rest since competition begins tomorrow. It is always fun to see all the coaches and players in "non-tennis" attire, as oftentimes, I need a double-take to recognize them!
We all returned to the hotel for a 9:00 p.m. team meeting to go over our plan and schedule for tomorrow's early match against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Don't forget, you can all go to the Georgia athletic homepage for live updates on all matches. Go Bruins!
