Bruins, 49ers Split Doubleheader

Feb. 23, 2002

Final Stats

LAKEWOOD, CA - UCLA split a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, losing the first and winning the second game at Lisa Fernandez Field at Mayfair Park against Long Beach State. Long Beach State won the first game of the day, 3-2 in nine innings, but the Bruins rebounded for a 10-0 seven-inning win in game two. UCLA is now 17-1 on the 2002 season.

In the day's opener, UCLA had numerous opportunities to score, leaving a total of 13 runners on base in the game. The Bruins did push two runs across in the fifth inning, with a one-out rally that started with a single by Natasha Watley. Following a fielders choice with no out on the play during Amanda Freed's at-bat and a walk to Stacey Nuveman, Watley would score on a sacrifice fly by Tairia Mims. A bases-loaded walk to Crissy Buck would score UCLA's second and final run of the game.

Long Beach two unearned runs in the sixth inning on two hits, aided by a Bruin error on the leadoff batter of the inning. UCLA left five runners on base in the final four innings of the game, including runners on first and second in the seventh and second and third in the ninth without scoring a run. In the bottom of the ninth, 49er designated player Darcey Brown grounded out before Bruin pitcher Freed loaded the bases with a hit batter and two walks. Centerfielder Natalie Walker then stepped to the plate, and hit a ball to Bruin centerfielder Stephanie Ramos for the second out of the inning. Ramos' throw to the plate was just wide, allowing Nicole Spencer to score the game-ending run on the sacrifice fly.

Keira Goerl started game two in the circle for UCLA, and posted her fourth double-figure strikeout performance of the season. Offensively, the Bruins started quickly, scoring one run in the first, one in the third, and four in the fourth inning, including a monster three-run home run by Nuveman that traveled at least 300 feet in the air. Nuveman would add another RBI in the fifth, scoring Watley from second base on a single down the left field line. For the week's four games, Nuveman went 10-for-12 for a .833 batting average. She had two home runs and two doubles contributing to a 1.500 slugging percentage.

Goerl earned the victory for the Bruins, improving to 9-0. She struck out 11 batters, and did not issue a walk on the evening.

UCLA returns to action on Wednesday afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader at Easton Stadium against Cal State Fullerton before playing host to Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Purdue and Florida for the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, March 1-3.
