Los Angeles -The No. 4-seeded UCLA men's tennis team began its quest for the 2002 NCAA title Saturday, registering an impressive, 4-0 first-round victory over UC Santa Barbara at the NCAA Regionals at UCLA. With the victory, the Bruins improve to 20-4 on the year and move into tomorrow's regional final against San Diego State (18-8). The Aztecs advanced earlier in the day with a 5-0 decision over Hampton.
Despite playing without its top player Tobias Clemens, UCLA still managed to dominate the match. After taking a pair of 8-3 decisions at the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles positions, the Bruins owned a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. In singles, UCLA's Alberto Francis, who was not in the lineup until Clemens was scratched, registered a quick 6-2, 6-0 victory over Alex Yaftali at the No. 6 position. Bruin junior Erfan Djahangiri then made the score 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alex Anselme. The match was clinched at the No. 3 position where Jean-Julien Rojer defeated Mike Placek, 6-1, 6-3.
Tomorrow's regional final begins at Noon. The winner advances to the NCAA Round of 16 in College Station, TX, May 18-21.
