LOS ANGELES - The No. 7-ranked UCLA women's tennis team claimed the doubles point and then won five of six singles matches in straight sets, cruising to a 7-0 decision over Long Beach State in its 2003 season opener at the Los Angeles Tennis Center Thursday.
UCLA's top singles player Sara Walker, ranked No. 6 in the latest ITA rankings, turned in the most impressive performance of the afternoon, downing Long Beach State's Laura Thomas, 6-1, 6-1.
Bruin sophomore Sarah Gregg also won in straight sets, defeating Lindsey Marvel, 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 3 position.
Thursday marked the dual-match debut of Bruin freshmen Jackie Carleton, Susi Wild and Laura Gordon. Carleton, ranked No. 84 in the nation, was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Megan Biorkman at No. 2 singles. Wild registered a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Kelly Chan, while Gordon posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Claudia Argumedo.
The longest match of the day came at No. 6 singles where Bruin sophomore Anya Loncaric battled back from a set down to defeat Alanah Carroll, 5-7, 7-6(5), 7-6 (1).
The Bruins return to action this Saturday, hosting Pepperdine at the LATC beginning at Noon.
