UCLA Falls To Stanford, 6-2

May 20, 2006

Box Score

Los Angeles - Stanford sophomore Nolan Gallagher tossed a complete game, holding UCLA to one hit in the final four innings to lead the Cardinal to a 6-2 win over the Bruins on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The loss drops UCLA to 29-22 overall and 11-9 in the Pac-10 while Stanford improves to 29-22 overall and 11-12 in the Pac-10.

Freshman Jermaine Curtis led the way for the Bruins going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, and senior Chris Jensen went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI.

Junior LHP Dave Huff (6-3) threw 6.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts and one walk in a losing effort. Huff's outing was his shortest of the season, as he failed to go 8.0 innings or more for the first time in eight starts.

UCLA took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Curtis singled with one out, and Jensen followed with a double to right center as Curtis scored from first on a fielding error by Stanford right fielder Michael Taylor.

Stanford jumped ahead of UCLA 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning. Chris Minaker hit a two-run home run to left field, and Randy Molina hit a RBI single through the right side with two outs to give the Cardinal a two-run lead.

Stanford took a 5-1 lead over UCLA in the fifth inning on a RBI groundout by Minaker and a solo home run by Taylor to center with two outs.

UCLA cut the Cardinal lead to 5-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman Brandon Crawford doubled to left center, and Curtis singled through the left side to give the Bruins runners at the corners. Jensen followed with a single through the right side to score Crawford and advance Curtis to third as Jensen advanced to second on the throw from right by Taylor. With runners at second and third and one out, junior Hector Ambriz struck out swinging, and senior Brett McMillan hit a ground ball that almost got through the right side but Stanford first baseman Brent Milleville made a diving stop to end the inning and prevent the runners from scoring.

Chris Lewis hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the eighth inning to put Stanford up 6-2.

UCLA went scoreless the final four innings of the game, as only two Bruins reached base down the stretch.

UCLA and Stanford will play the decisive game of the three-game series on Sunday, May 20 at 1 p.m.
