Women's Water Polo Hosts MPSF Tournament, April 9-11

MPSF Tournament Information: The UCLA Bruins will host the fourth annual Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Water Polo Championship this week, April 9-11. Competition begins at 7:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday, with the first place match beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Participating schools include No. 3 California, No. 5 Hawaii, No. 11 Long Beach State, No. 15 Pacific, No. 6 San Diego State, No. 10 San Jose State, No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 UCLA, No. 8 UC Santa Barbara and No. 1 USC.

On Friday, UCLA is slated to play Long Beach State at 9:40 a.m. and San Jose State at 2 p.m. On Saturday, the Bruins meet Hawaii at 9:40 a.m. and the rival USC Trojans at 4:10 p.m. The Bruins have fallen to USC in their three meetings this season but have recorded wins over San Jose State, Long Beach State and Hawaii.

All games will be held at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on the UCLA campus. Tickets may be purchased at the Championship. Ticket prices: $10/ adult for a one day ticket; $15/ adult for a two-day pass; $20/ adult for a three-day pass; $5/day for students and youth. All seating is general admission.

Bruin Notes: The Bruins have outscored their 1999 regular-season opponents 169- 96. Currently, the Bruins have not lost a single game by more than three points, having recorded double overtime losses against top-ranked USC and No. 3 California.

Freshman Elaine Zivich (Lompoc), who has scored in all but one game this season, leads the Bruins with 40 points. She is followed by freshman Jenny Lamb (Huntington Beach) who has 23 goals and sophomore Kristin Guerin (Los Alamitos) who has 19 goals.

The Bruins dominated Long Beach State 11-4 on Thursday, April 1. Lamb and senior Katie Tenenbaum (Merced) led the Bruins with two goals. A total of nine players notched points for the Bruins. The following day, the Bruins recorded an 8-2 victory against San Diego State. Zivich paced the Bruins with three points, while Lamb and Guerin each notched two goals.
