LOS ANGELES - UCLA moved into a tie for first place in the Pac-10 on Sunday afternoon, on the strength of its 3-1 victory over Oregon coupled with Cal's 2-1 win over Arizona. The Bruins improve to 40-6 with Sunday's win, as sophomore pitcher Keira Goerl improves to 21-4 on the season. The Bruins have an 8-3 Pac-10 record, which is tied for first with Arizona, and half a game ahead of third-place California (8-4). With Sunday's loss, Oregon falls to 18-21 (0-12 Pac-10).
UCLA opened the scoring in the first inning, as Natasha Watley led off with a single that dropped between the Ducks shortstop and left fielder. After stealing second base, she advanced to third on a fielders choice by Tairia Mims and scored on a line-drive single to right field by Stacey Nuveman.
Oregon scrapped back to tie the game in the third inning, as xxx Eversley led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. She went to second base when a pickoff attempt by Mims went into right field, and would steal third base before coming home on a single by Alyssa Laux.
Claire Sua re-took the lead for the Bruins in the third inning, hitting her ninth home run of the year, hitting the batting cage in right center field. A third run would score for the Bruins in the fourth, on an odd play. Erin Rahn was UCLA's lead baserunner, reaching on a one-out infield single. She stol second during Watley's at-bat, and went to third on an Amanda Freed single. With Freed stealing second, the pitch ricocheted from the plate into the UCLA dugout, advancing Rahn home and Freed to third. UCLA was unable to score additional runs, as Mims walked, Nuveman was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Stephanie Ramos grounded out to end the inning.
That was all the offense the Bruins would need, as Keira Goerl continued her dominant performance in the circle. Goerl notched her 21st victory of the season, striking out 10 and walking one.
UCLA returns to the diamond on Wednesday, April 24, with a single game against Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm at Easton Stadium.
