College Station, TX - At the 2004 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, held at Texas A&M's Student Rec. Natatorium, a pair of Bruin seniors have advanced to tonight's finals. Sara Platzer will compete in the 50m Free and Malin Svahnstrom will swim in the 200m IM final. The UCLA 200m Free Relay team of Kim Vandenberg, Svahnstrom, Amy Thurman and Platzer has also advanced to tonight's final.
In the 400m Free prelim, freshman Katie Nelson finished 14th in a school record 4:09.88. The previous record of 4:11.86 was set earlier this year by fellow freshman Jane Imagane. Senior Jackie Lobdell finished 23rd in 4:10.90. And, Imagane tied for 34th in 4:12.36. Nelson advanced to tonight's consolation final.
In the 200m IM prelim, Svahnstrom finished seventh in 2:12.85. Junior Kim Scarborough was 27th (2:14.81) and senior Naoko Watanabe was 49th (2:17.07). In the 50m Free prelim, Platzer swam a school record 24.80 to finish fourth. Keiko Price set the previous record of 25.24 in 2000. Freshmen Arnold and Amy Thurman also competed in the 50m Free Prelim. Arnold was 42nd (25.89) and Thurman was 43rd (25.92).
In the one-meter springboard prelim, sophomore Paige Thompson finished 33rd, scoring 234.25.
In the prelims, the 200m Free Relay finished eighth in a school record 1:41.65. The group had set the previous school record of 1:42.57 earlier this year. And, the 400m Medley Relay team of Arnold, Leslie Hovsepian, Vandenberg and Platzer finished 10th in 4:04.66, advancing to the consolation final.
The finals will begin tonight at 7:00 PM CST/5:00 PM PST.
